Equipment

  • medium-large saucepan
  • potato masher or fork
  • lidded jars

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ripe Bartlett pears seeds and stem removed and diced
  • 1 pound ripe plums halved, pits removed, diced
  • 1 pinky-sized piece ginger peeled (about 1 tablespoon diced)
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup or more to taste
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds

Instructions

  1. Set a medium-large saucepan over medium-high heat and add 1 pound ripe Bartlett pears (seeds and stem removed and diced), 1 pound ripe plums (halved, pits removed, diced), the peeled pinky-sized piece of ginger (about 1 tablespoon diced), and 1/3 cup pure maple syrup.
  2. Heat the fruit mixture until it comes to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and cook, stirring frequently, until the fruit has cooked down and liquified, about 25-30 minutes.
  3. Carefully mash any remaining chunks of fruit with a potato masher or fork, taste, and add additional maple syrup if desired to reach your preferred sweetness.
  4. Stir in 1/4 cup chia seeds and cook for another minute to activate the seeds and begin thickening the jam.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat and let the jam cool enough to pour into lidded jars.

Notes

Jam will thicken as it cools because of the chia seeds; adjust maple syrup to taste before adding chia. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for 2-3 months. Makes a small batch perfect for toast, yogurt, or gifting.
